10-Day Olympic Hoh Rainforest to the Blue Glacier Teen Adventure
This is a sample itinerary only and is subject to change.
Day 1: After meeting, get acquainted with the group through some fun games. We’ll do a gear and backpack review, a map/route review, and goal-setting before dinner and camping under a blanket of stars.
Day 2: Hike an easygoing, flat 5 miles into the depths of the lush Hoh rainforest and spend the evening relaxing by the fire next to the great Hoh River.
Day 3: Day three will consist of another stroll through the rainforest, as we hike another 5 miles deeper into the valley. Spend time admiring the lush mosses and taking in the forest’s quiet. Arrive at Lewis Meadows and explore the expanding valley before settling in for another hearty dinner and a relaxing night.
Day 4: Today, we hike from Lewis Meadows to Elk Lake Campground, following along to the headwaters of the Hoh River. We will enjoy each other’s company with another hearty meal and stories under the starlight.
Day 5: Blue Glacier Day! Today is a day hike only, so we will leave the big packs behind. Continue the hike up the Valley, including climbing (down and up) a 100-foot ladder along a washed-out scree slope. We will savor the views upon arrival at the Blue Glacier with Mount Olympus towering overhead. Return to camp.
Day 6: We will follow the Hoh River back down the Valley we ascended in the previous days. Today, we will camp at the Olympus Guard Station and enjoy a resupply.
Day 7: Hoh Lake and the High Divide trail. Today is a strenuous uphill day hike to Hoh Lake and the High Divide Trail. Enjoy the sweeping views before the downhill return to camp.
Day 8: After another hearty breakfast and group games, we will continue down the Valley to the Five Mile Island campsite.
Day 9: A flat, leisurely 5 miles takes us back to where we started, at the Hoh Visitor Center. If time allows, we will take the 1-mile loop through the Hall of Mosses before exiting to the trailhead and being amazed by the quietude and lush green. Return to the Hoh Rain Forest Campsite for our final night together and bracelet ceremony.
Day 10: After a restful night, enjoy breakfast and pack up before transport to our pick-up location and final goodbyes.
Other: On all of our summer youth programs, we have a daily morning meeting where youth engage in group games, share highlights, offer praise to each other, stretch, review maps and day itineraries, and set individual and group goals for the day. Also, whether breaking on the trail or in the afternoon or evening in the campsite, our Outdoor Educators also facilitate additional opportunities for youth to develop a personal connection with nature. Problem-solving and initiative games are common, as are smiles. Additional outdoor skills are gained as we practice Leave No Trace principles and promote environmental stewardship throughout the length of the program.
Note: This is only a sample itinerary and actual itineraries are subject to change. If we are unable to obtain the permits, or if various conditions make this itinerary unfeasible, we will provide an alternative trailhead and itinerary in Olympic National Park.
