Big changes are coming to how visitors access Yosemite National Park. The National Park Service has just announced a new reservation system for select dates in 2025, and if you’re planning a visit, it’s essential to be prepared. If you show up during those hours without a reservation, you’ll be turned away—unless you meet one of the exceptions.
What’s Changing?
Yosemite is implementing a temporary peak-hours reservation system to help manage congestion during busy times. Here’s a quick breakdown:
A reservation will be required to drive into or through Yosemite National Park between 6 am and 2 pm on these days:
- May 24 through May 26 (Memorial Day weekend): A reservation is required from 6 am to 2 pm on Saturday through Monday.
- May 27 through June 14: A reservation is not required at any time.
- June 15 through August 15: A reservation is required from 6 am to 2 pm daily.
- August 16 through August 29: A reservation is not required at any time.
- August 30 through September 1 (Labor Day weekend): A reservation is required from 6 am to 2 pm on Saturday through Monday.

Booking Windows
Reservations for ALL 2025 dates are being released May 6, 2025, at 8 am PDT on recreation.gov. They will go quickly so make an account ahead of time and have a plan!
This is only a percentage of the reservations allotted, however. If the date you want is booked, the park will release additional reservations seven days ahead of time. (e.g., make a reservation on July 24th for an arrival date of July 31st)
Cost
Each reservation has a non-refundable $2 fee. This does not include the $35 park entrance fee.
Duration
Each reservation is good for three whole days. If you are staying longer than that, you need to make another reservation.
Exceptions
With any reservation system, there are exceptions to the rules. If you have any of the following, you don’t need to make a reservation.
Exceptions:
Backpacking Permit
Half Dome Permit
In-Park Lodging, Camping, or Vacation Rental
Regional Transportation (YARTS)
Tour Group (That’s us!)

Important to Know
The entrance stations do NOT have cell service. You must print out or take a screenshot of your reservation details before driving to the park. Furthermore, the person whose name is on the reservation must be there and present a photo ID.
