Meet the Guide: Caroline Shipley

From the small town of Krum, Texas to the wide-open deserts of Joshua Tree, Caroline Shipley is chasing her dream—and helping others find theirs along the way. With three years of guiding under her belt and a heart full of curiosity, she’s bringing her love of the outdoors, food, and connection to her first season with Lasting Adventures.

Where It All Began

Caroline’s outdoor story started in high school, where a few passionate youth group leaders sparked her interest in backpacking.

“When I think about my fond memories from that time in my life, many of them come from our backpacking trips,” she recalls.

But it wasn’t until college—and the stillness of a pandemic shutdown—that she decided to pursue guiding.

“Freshman year, COVID shut everything down. I found myself back home, daydreaming about spending time in all the national parks. Eventually I realized I needed to give guiding a try or I’d always be dreaming.”

The next year, she started guiding kayaking and backpacking trips for college students, and instantly fell in love.

What She’s Most Excited About

As she begins her first season with Lasting Adventures, Caroline is eager to help guests forge deep, meaningful experiences in the outdoors.

“I’m most excited to share these experiences with students and hopefully expose them to the different ways they can enjoy the outdoors.”

Go-To Trail Songs and Camp Comforts

While her trail soundtrack changes trip to trip, lately it’s been anything off Cowboy Carter stuck in her head. And when it comes to camp meals, she brings that same passion from her kitchen to the backcountry stove.

“Cooking and meal times are probably my favorite part of these trips,” she says.
“One of my go-to’s is Chicken Curry Couscous with peanut butter and sriracha—or a classic red beans and rice. Salty, cozy, and perfect after a big day on trail.”

And what is her best piece of advice for new backpackers?

“Always bring a pair of dry, designated sleeping socks. It’s such a simple comfort. And leave the towel at home—you can always sun dry!”

Views and Values

Though she’ll be guiding in Olympic National Park, Caroline has a soft spot for Joshua Tree.

“The view from the Gunsight scramble is definitely one of my favorites.”

As for what makes a great guide, she believes it starts with being real:

“Guides should be earnest, true to themselves, and open-minded. In outdoor education, I think the best educators are the ones with infectious energy who really listen.”

Mentorship and Meaning

Caroline credits her first boss, Robert, with showing her what true leadership looks like.

“He was approachable, solution-oriented, and always willing to do the work himself. He’s still someone I reach out to—both for advice and to share life updates.”

When it comes to guiding youth and guests, Caroline values the power of connection above all else.

“The most valuable thing we do is meet people where they are—help them connect with nature, with others, and with themselves. That’s when the growth happens.”

If She Were an Animal…

Caroline has an unexpected spirit animal: the octopus.

“They’re fascinating! I’d love to experience life the way they do.”

Caroline brings heart, humility, and a deep passion for people to everything she does. We’re so excited to welcome her to the Lasting Adventures team—keep an eye out for her big smile and comforting camp meals on the trail this summer!
