Best Time of Year To Hike Half Dome

What Time of Year is Best?

Our clients often ask us what time of year is best to hike Half Dome. No matter the time of year, the experience is both exhilarating and rewarding, offering breathtaking views of the park’s unparalleled natural beauty. We’ve guided thousands of guests to the summit, and know from experience what each season offers. It’s important to keep in mind that almost all hikers who summit Half Dome do so using the cable system. The cables are typically in place from Memorial Day weekend in Late May until Columbus Day weekend in October.

So given the relatively short timeframe the cables are up each year, when is the best time of year to hike Half Dome?  Let’s explore the varying seasons and learn more about the unique experiences each season offers for hiking Half Dome.

Why Hiking Half Dome in Spring is Best: A Wildflower Wonderland

In years when the Half Dome cables open up on or around Memorial Day, Spring can provide a spectacular summit experience. During this season, Yosemite Valley and its surroundings burst into life with vibrant wildflowers, lush meadows, and roaring waterfalls. The Merced River swells with snowmelt, providing refreshing sights and sounds along the trail.

Hiking in the spring means you’ll encounter fewer crowds compared to the peak summer months. Permits are also easier to secure through the lottery system. However, be prepared for some sections of the trail to be wet and potentially icy, especially in the early spring.  Proper gear like trekking poles and waterproof boots are a must. Also keep in mind that some years the cables do not go up until the middle of June. This is largely determined by how severe the previous winter was, and how much snowpack is remaining.

Why Hiking Half Dome in Summer is Best: The Peak Season Thrill

Summer—late June to early September—is when Half Dome sees the highest number of visitors. The snow has melted, and the trails are clear, making it a popular time for hikers. The warm weather and longer daylight hours create the perfect conditions for a challenging, yet unforgettable, journey.

Due to the popularity of summer hikes, obtaining a permit can be a daunting task. Be sure to enter the lottery well in advance to secure your spot (or let us handle the permits for you!). Also, be aware that the cables section can get quite crowded, so patience and caution are key as you ascend the final stretch to the summit.

Why Hiking Half Dome in Autumn is Best: Serenity and Stunning Foliage

Autumn—September to mid-October—offers a unique and tranquil hiking experience. The weather is cooler. The crowds begin to dwindle. Overall, it’s an excellent time to hike Half Dome without the summer hustle and bustle. The fall foliage provides a picturesque backdrop to your hike, with the changing colors of the trees adding to the already stunning scenery.

Keep in mind that as the season progresses, some facilities in the park may close, and the weather can be less predictable. Be prepared for chilly temperatures at higher elevations and potential snowfall in the later part of the season.
