Admin Spotlight: Meet Scott, Founder and Executive Director

If you’ve ever reached out to Lasting Adventures, there’s a good chance you’ve already connected with Scott Gehrman, whether you realized it or not. As the Founder and Executive Director, Scott has worn just about every hat in the company over the past three decades, helping shape Lasting Adventures from a small community program into a leader in guided backpacking trips across the West Coast’s most iconic national parks.

From Eagle Scout to Industry Leader

Scott’s journey into the outdoors started early. As an Eagle Scout, he spent his formative years immersed in backpacking trips and outdoor experiences that would ultimately shape his career path. Along the way, mentors—from Scout leaders to teachers, and especially his mother—helped foster a deep appreciation for nature, particularly the magic of Yosemite.

That early spark turned into a lifelong passion—and eventually, a profession.

Building Lasting Adventures

With 33 years in the outdoor industry and a background in psychology and counseling from Sonoma State University, Scott founded Lasting Adventures with a mission rooted in growth, connection, and meaningful experiences in the outdoors.

In the early days, he personally designed and guided trips. These days, his role looks a little different, but no less hands-on.

“As Executive Director, I find myself doing a bit of everything under the sun; bookings, marketing, HR, operations, funding…you name it.”

And yes, if you’ve emailed or called, there’s a real chance Scott himself was on the other end.

What Keeps Him Inspired

Ask Scott what he loves most about his work, and his answer comes down to people.

“The smiles, the accomplishments, the memories, whether it’s staff, clients, or youth on our summer camps. And when I get to hear about those experiences personally, it gives me a real sense of fulfillment.”

It’s that human connection, and the transformation that happens on trail, that continues to drive everything he does.

A Legacy of Growth

While there isn’t a single moment Scott points to as his proudest, the bigger picture says it all.

“Watching Lasting Adventures grow from a small community backpacking program into an industry leader… I’m proud of all of it.”

Trail Talk with Scott

Favorite animal?
Eagle—fitting for an Eagle Scout. The idea of soaring over the mountains he’s spent decades exploring? Even better. (And, as he puts it, a convenient way to check on trips in the field.)

Favorite hiking snack?
Cashews and pistachios.

Favorite view?
Vogelsang Pass in Yosemite—wide open, alpine, and unforgettable.

Outside hobbies?
Snowboarding, scuba diving, hiking, and traveling.

Gear Wisdom

When it comes to gear, Scott keeps it simple: good footwear is everything.

“Your boots are like the tires on your car—a good trip depends on a solid connection to the trail.”

And what should you leave behind?

Skip the wet wipes. They’re smelly, attract wildlife, and create unnecessary waste. A simple bandana can do the job and be reused throughout your trip.

Why It All Matters

At the heart of it all, Scott believes in the transformative power of the outdoors.

“Whether you’re a child or an adult, these experiences create opportunities for personal growth. They help people connect—with themselves, their group, and the world around them.”

Advice for First-Time Backpackers

“Be okay with getting a little dirty and sweating. It’s all part of the journey to reach places that only your own two feet can take you to.”

From Eagle Scout to founder, guide to executive director, Scott’s journey is woven into every Lasting Adventures trip. And while the company has grown, the mission remains the same: create experiences that stay with people long after they leave the trail.
