Itinerary

Day 1
Meet your guide and the Power Tripper staff at noon at the May Lake parking lot located off the Tioga Road in Yosemite. We will pack up in the parking lot before hiking 1.3 moderate miles to May Lake. May Lake is an absolutely beautiful high sierra lake at 9,329’, and one of the largest by area in Yosemite National Park. The designated backpacker’s campsites are along the south shore of the lake will be our base camp for the weekend. There are seasonally operating flush toilets and a fresh water tap here. After enjoying a swim, snacks, water, yoga and some relaxation here at May Lake, the guides will cook you a delicious dinner and take you to one of the best sunset spots in Yosemite overlooking a huge swath of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Day 2
The next morning, after a hearty breakfast with hot coffee or tea, we will go on a 2 mile, 1,500 foot climb to the peak of Mount Hoffman (without full backpacks). This is the most strenuous 2 miles of the trip, being uphill the whole way. The last mile up, we will be hiking upon loose granite boulders and rocks through an indefinite trail marked by cairns, or rock stacks. From the base of the summit, it is about a 150 vertical foot moderately steep scramble up granitic boulders to the peak. Reaching the peak is very much worth the tough trek, being the geographical center of the park and reaching higher than Cloud’s Rest and Half Dome at 10850 feet, Mount Hoffman provides a 360-degree perspective of the entire park. With incredible views of Half Dome, Cloud’s Rest, the Clark Range, the Cathedral Range and Tuolumne’s High Country, and of the park’s northern borders it is easy to understand why this huge exfoliating mountain was John Muir’s favorite view and potentially an incredible yoga spot. After you have had your fill of the overwhelming views from the peak, we will backtrack the trail, all downhill, descending 1500 vertical feet back to May Lake, where another swim, yoga session and/or fishing session may be enjoyed typically followed by another memorable dinner and sunset.

Day 3
On the last day, you will again wake up to breakfast and hot drinks, before deciding whether to go on a day hike around May Lake or head down early depending on what time you would like to finish the trip on Sunday. Afterward, we will continue retracing 1.1 miles down to the May Lake parking lot. If you started here, this is where our day will end around 11am-12pm after sweet reminisces and goodbyes.

Other: The May Lake Yosemite trip combines high alpine lakes and scenery, a chance to summit a major and easy peak in Yosemite, and views into the Yosemite High Country from an awesome perch above your campsite at May Lake.
