2020 SUMMER CAMPS NOW CANCELED: As of June 16, all summer camp sessions in all National Parks are now canceled due to risks created by Coronavirus. Private, family backpacking trips and day hikes are available, and we are now accepting new bookings. Contact our office at [email protected] for more info.
Highlights: Our 6-Day Teen Summer Camp in Northern California’s Lassen Volcanic National Park is designed for participants ages 13-18 who are either new or experienced backpackers. This Lassen Volcanic adventure includes camping and hiking beside high alpine lakes, boiling mud pots, and ancient volcanoes. Most trips have an opportunity to summit a peak and/or partake in some spectacular sunsets among some spectacular geological formations. Risk-taking and challenges complimented by fun and support from others lead to a positive adventure for all.
This is a Sample Itinerary only.
Day 1: Your guides will meet you and your campers at Summit Lake at 2 pm. They guides will work individually or small groups to do a final gear check and packing demonstration. Group gear will also be divvied out. Once everyone has arrived and had the opportunity to pack, guides will facilitate an ice breaker for the campers to meet one another. After, they will be hitting the trail to Widow Lake, approximately four miles from Summit Lake.
Day 2: Campers will wake up and begin breaking down camp while the Leaders of the Day help get breakfast started and receive their morning briefing from a guide. After a hearty breakfast, a stretch and goals circle and group briefing, campers will be on their way to Jakey Lake.
Day 3: Leaders of the Day will be responsible for waking up campers and facilitating the morning routine. Once the leaders are ready to leave camp, the group will begin their five-ish mile day to Horseshoe Lake, ensuring time for activities and potential swading in the lake.
Day 4: Today is a layover day. Instead of breaking down camp and hiking to a new destination, campers will prepare for a day hike decided on as a collective group. The afternoon will consist of adventure based activities, swading, and rest.
Day 5: Leaders of the Day will resume their responsibilities, getting campers ready to hike to Snag Lake for their final night. Camp will be set alongside the Majestic Lava beds and Snag Lake.
Day 6: An alpine start will be necessary! Leaders of the Day will have their campers up and ready before the sun rises to hike them to the base of Cinder Cone. The group will drop their packs and head for the summit to get breathtaking views of Lassen Peak, the Majestic Lava Beds, Painted Dunes and Butte and Snag Lakes.
Note: Remember this is only a sample itinerary and actual itineraries are subject to change.
Other: On all of our summer camps, we have a daily circle time in the morning where youth engage in group games, share highlights, offer encouragement and support to each other, stretch, review maps and day itineraries, and set individual and group goals for the day. Also, whether breaking on the trail or in the afternoon or evening in the campsite, our Guides also facilitate additional opportunities for youth to develop a personal connection with nature. Problem-solving and initiative games are common as are smiles. Additional outdoor skills are gained as we practice Leave No Trace principles and promote environmental stewardship throughout the length of the program.
Our Sunday through Friday program begins at Summit Lake at 12 pm on Sundays and ends in the same location at 12-1 pm on Friday.
